Hui had long wanted to produce a movie in China. The message in the film is to understand and accept differences, to see the world through others' perspective and to foster more understanding between people and groups. The main theme in Monster Hunt, according to Hui is acceptance, similar to the Shrek series which Hui was also involved in. The story begins with Song Tianyin, an unnerved young village mayor who becomes pregnant with the Monster Queen's baby, and he encounters an aspiring monster hunter named Huo Xiaolan, and they both embark on an adventure to protect the baby from villains of the Human and Monster worlds alike. Recently, a civil war took place in the Monster Realm which resulted in the usurpation of the Monster King's throne from a treacherous minister, who later sought the Monster Queen and her unborn baby, and the Monster Queen fled to the Human Realm. They once shared the world in peace and harmony until the Humans drove the Monsters out from their home, for they sought total dominion over their lands. The film takes place in ancient China, where the Human race existed alongside the Monster race. Along the way, they encounter a Pawnshop Owner ( Rebecca Tang), a Chef ( Yao Chen), a pair of adorable demons (Zhang Yue Xuan and Cindy Tian) and many other personalities, all while uncovering a groundbreaking secret. In order to get paid, Xiao Lan forcefully drags Tian Yin out of the comforts of Yong Ning Village to begin a legendary journey.

Ge Qian Hu ( Wallace Chung) is paying big money for the future Demon King. To protect her baby, the demon queen pops it inside Tian Yin's body and he becomes a man pregnant with a monster child. They arrive at Yong Ning Village where they meet Tian Yin ( Jing Bo Ran), a kind-hearted lad, Xiao Lan ( Bai Bai He), a demon hunter and Luo Gang ( Jiang Wu), another demon hunter who opposes Xiao Lan at every turn.
